bumped minimum Perl version to 5.8, as working around 5.6 bugs is not worth the trouble

work around buggy code calling UNIVERSAL::can() as a function

To install UNIVERSAL::can, copy and paste the appropriate command in to your terminal.

cpanm UNIVERSAL::can

perl -MCPAN -e shell
install UNIVERSAL::can
